battery use is poor,can only get 9 hours music (medium) 4 hours video and 2 hours internet radio before it has to be recharged.Is it faulty considering it's new,or is this normal for an ipod touch 6th generation ? I'm thinking of sending it back.

You can make an appointment at your local apple store or authorized service provider and have them check it out.

I know it's not perfect but they so sell external batteries you can connect your device to. They're very affordable anymore.

I have a 6th gen iPod and I end up charging it every day, and sometimes twice a day. I dont listen to music on it but do play a game and occasionally check e-mail so I don't think your experiences are out of line not with my experience anyway

When you're playing music stored on your iPod you're simply accessing the digital files and turning that file into sound. When you're downloading Internet radio you're using the wifi antenna to access the Internet, downloading and processing the file and then turning it into sound. You're device is working twice as hard. It's not only downloading data, it's then turning that data into sound.

The same thing applies if you're using YouTube. Watching video on YouTube requires your iPod to use its Wi-Fi to get to YouTube. Apple's figures for "watching video" almost certainly refers to a video stored on your iPod.

I average about 4-1/2 to 5 hours watching YouTube videos with near full speaker volume on my 6th Gen iPod Touch.

I gain almost an hour more if I use headphones instead of the iPod Touch's speaker at slightly over medium volume.

I use Pandora and Slacker Internet Radio and I average a lot longer than you with these apps, again fairly high volume...usually average about 4 hours.

If I use headphones at a little more than medium voulume, I get about 5-1/2 to 6 hours.

If I play my own internal music library, at near full speaker volume, I get almost the same as you do...approx. around 7-8-8 1/2 hours.

Using headphones, I can play music from my library for between 9-10 hours.

Not sure why you are getting a lot less streaming audio/video time durations, though.

I don't have a lot of resource hungry things going on my iDevices,,so this maybe why I am getting longer battery life for Internet streaming times than you.

You can do things to improve your battery life like turning down the screen brightness, turn off background App refresh, reduce all of the motion graphics eye candy, trim down your app and email notifications, manually fetch email instead of email automatically fetching emails at a timed interval, etc.

what I fail to understand is why the advertise up to 40 hours playback when it's obvious people are commonly getting one-quarter of this. The best I can do with airplane mode, internet off etc is around 12 hours. Pretty pathetic against the headline claim.

I don't know where they got that 40 hour figure, either.

I am only getting a quarter of that!

Maybe if all the music on the device is all low quality mp3 formatted?

Using higher sound quality formats can eat up more of the iPod's computational and hardware resources resulting in a significant drop in overall battery life.

I use both the standard AIFF and Apple lossless format at its highest quality setting when I import all of own my music.

Those formats use a LOT more of the iPod's resources to process, lowering battery life.

I would rather sacrifice battery life for better digital music quality than to listen to low fidelity music for up to 40 hours, anyways.

I am using more Bluetooth sound devices with my 6th gen iPod Touch, now, and I am only getting. about bewteen 8-9 hours, or so, on a full charge.

There's a reason I have a charger at work and carry one of those portable batteries. It's very rare for me to get through the day without needing to recharge my 6th gen. ANd I don't even listen to music on it, I play a game (which is more processor intensive, I know)

Part of my routine is to charge it every night. there is just something about that size of battery that doesn't last long. ANd this has been the issue with the 4th, 5th and 6th gen touches.
